On our family trip to Chicago last week, we enjoyed a lovely meal at Athena Greek Restaurant at 212 S. Halsted in Greektown. It was recommended to me by Jenny Kales, The Nut Free Mom, as a peanut and nut allergy friendly restaurant.
I was very impressed from the moment I was greeted through to the end of our meal. The dinner menu items do not contain peanuts or nuts, and all I could see with any nuts were the baklava desserts. They do not use peanut oil at Athena. Please check the menu carefully yourself when you dine there.
We ordered tzatziki, olives (which Jacob loved), spanakopitakia, gigantes (my favorite dish), and spanakorizo, a dinner salad, and shrimp skordati. When bread was brought to the table, I inquired about its allergy safety, and I was extremely impressed and truly appreciated when the manager called the owner of Upper Crust bakery to determine the bread’s safety. It was in fact peanut and nut safe, though Jacob did not eat it, since he used to forgoing bread and dessert for safety reasons when we dine out.
I loved the atmosphere at Athena. It’s very clean with a nice open feel, and the dining room extends to a sunny open air patio that was bright with sunlight, although it was 6 pm when we arrived.

Hi everyone,
First off, I want to say that I’m so happy Elizabeth and her family enjoyed Athena–one of my family’s favorites.
I just discovered that the restaurant has new ownership (as of summer 2014). I’m not sure if the menu will be affected — I hope not — but I wanted to give a heads-up.
If you plan to go there, just be sure to check the menu.
Best, Jenny
